“It’s just uninhabitable,” Mother claims son unable to shower for 19 days at Oklahoma County Jail

“It’s just uninhabitable,” Mother claims son unable to shower for 19 days at Oklahoma County Jail

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The mother of an inmate inside the Oklahoma County Jail claims her son has not had a shower in 19 days. The allegation is one of dozens that KFOR has received regarding conditions inside the jail since a deadly hostage situation on the 10th floor of the jail a few weeks ago.  “As of today, it’s been 19 days since he’s been able to have a shower,” Lana James told News 4 on Monday.  Mother claims son received inadequate medical care at Oklahoma […]

Homelessness crisis rises across the US Midwest

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released its 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) on March 18. Also called the Point-in-Time (PIT) report, the AHAR graphs changes in the numbers of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people from year to year. The PIT report concluded that nationally, homelessness had increased even before the economic impact of the pandemic. 580,466 people were homeless on a single night in January 2020—an increase of 2.2 percent from 2019. Review: Live Theater Returns, With Mike Daisey and His Beefs

Review: Live Theater Returns, With Mike Daisey and His Beefs

The bedbug gambit is ironic; Daisey uses it to suggest how unprepared he and everyone else were for the worse disruptions that would come in 2020. Unfortunately, the “worse” is not fleshed out except in trivial ways that have the effect of deflating yet centering Daisey himself. The apartment in which he and his girlfriend are stuck “in captivity” is so small, he tells us, that he must work on the deck, sometimes in the rain. They have to learn to plan and make their own meals, […]

Knox County Detention Center using UV light machine to 'zap' COVID-19 off surfaces

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — Since the pandemic outbreak in Kentucky, LEX 18 has received hundreds of emails from viewers concerned about the spread of COVID-19 inside Kentucky’s detention centers. Some might argue that the spread there isn’t relevant, given the inmates are locked down, and not likely heading to the mall, or some other public setting anytime soon. But what about those who visit the detention centers? What about the guards and other staff members who go home each night? Or the inmate who is only […]
